LEGO lovers can get an up-close look at a unique new display in Richardson. A miniature brick replica of the Richardson Public Safety Campus is now on display in the main lobby, free for residents and other visitors to enjoy. Detective John Capers estimated it took around 200 hours to assemble h is creation. Capers works for the nearby Garland Police Department and has also created a LEGO model of his own department’s headquarters and the city’s downtown area. Each of his builds began with research, including video, to help Capers determine his design and all the details he includes in his models. “I try to do more than just building a building or a car,” Capers explained. “I try to do storytelling.” With a full-time job on the force, Capers finds time for his builds on nights and weekends. He said the Richardson building came together in about three months. Capers believes his hobby can help build bridges between law enforcement and the community. “It allows people to see us as more than just a badge, but as normal people with good ideas and hobbies and talents and somebody they can relate to,” he said. He also pointed out that many first responders need time to decompress and said he hopes they can find something similar to help after a rough day. “It may not be LEGOs.
