A recent narcotics operation in San Francisco led to 87 arrests and the seizure of several pounds of drugs and a few guns, the San Francisco police, district attorney and other agencies announced Friday. “This week we conducted two major enforcement operations. One was focused on arresting outs tanding fugitives. In the other we conducted undercover stings that led to the arrests of multiple drug dealers,” San Francisco police Chief Derrik Lew said. Lew also described arrests last week by SFPD in Oakland at four different homes. They said 13 people were arrested on brand new drug and weapons violations, 74 others were arrested who had outstanding warrants or parole violations. Most of these people taken into custody are familiar to officers and prosecutors. In April, the California Supreme Court ruled that only people charged with violent or sexual abuse felonies could be held without bail. These recent arrests come as the San Francisco Police Department continues saturation patrols in the Tenderloin and Mid-Market corridor. Those have been in progress since a series of shootings in the area last month. In one of those incidents, officers who are part of the SFPD’S Narcotics Enforcement Team were among the first to respond to aid the shooting victim and went on to help arrest three people suspected in the incident. The SFPD, sheriff’s department, federal partners and Mayor Daniel Lurie all say these enforcement efforts will continue. “We are doing this every couple of weeks. We have these operations,” Lurie said. “And I want to send a message to everybody, and I want everybody to hear this clearly; if you come to San Francisco to deal drugs or commit crime, we’re going to arrest you, we’re going to prosecute you.” Some of the people arrested this week were arraigned Friday; others will have their first appearance before a judge next Tuesday. ...read more read less
