Lane Johnson returned to Eagles training camp Friday morning after missing four days of practice. Johnson, the Eagles’ five-time all-pro right tackle, practiced on Thursday, July 30, then missed the next four days of practice with what the team called an excused and non-injury-related absence. Johnson, 36 and entering his 14th NFL season, is scheduled to meet with the media after practice Friday. Excused absences from practice are common, especially for older players. But Johnson’s absence was a little bit concerning because it lasted so long and because the Eagles have a new offensive line coach in Chris Kuper, who is installing a completely different system of blocking than his predecessor, Jeff Stoutland, and the more time the full unit has together the better. Stoutland is the only position coach Johnson had in his first 13 seasons. In Johnson’s absence, rookie 3rd-round pick Markel Bell from Miami of Florida took most of the 1st-team right tackle reps, including every rep the last two practices, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The team was off on Thursday. Johnson’s streak of four consecutive 1st– or 2nd-team all-pro seasons ended last year when he was limited to just 10 games after suffering a Lisfranc foot sprain during a game against the Lions in Week 11. He was replaced by Fred Johnson, who now appears to be behind Bell on the o-line depth chart. It’s been an encouraging summer for all three Eagles offensive linemen who were injured last year. Center Cam Jurgens has been a full participant and left guard Landon Dickerson has practiced regularly, although he occasionally will come out for part of practice and he got a routine rest day on Wednesday. Makai Lemon (hamstring), DeVonta Smith (hamstring), Cole Wisniewski (hamstring) and Keyshawn James-Newby (ankle) were out again Friday, and Britain Covey (hamstring) is also now out. Chance Campbell (groin) and Micah Morris (shoulder) were limited. ...read more read less
