Woman from Oregon, man from Washington killed in Wednesday accident in Mellette County

Two people died Wednesday (Aug. 5, 2026) in a single-vehicle crash near Belvidere, South Dakota.
Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates the driver of a 2001 Toyota Tundra
was traveling northbound on S.D. Highway 63 when they lost control on the washboards. The Toyota entered the ditch and rolled, ejecting all three occupants. Two people– a 20 year old woman from Bend, Oregon, and a 37 year old man from Olympia, Washington,– sustained fatal injuries. The third– a 29 year old woman from Redmond, Oregon,– was taken to a Rosebud hospital with life-threatening injuries before being transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital. None of the occupants were wearing a seat belt.
The Highway Patrol is investigating who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
