Community gathers to discuss toxic chemicals found under Richmond school campus
Aug 06, 2026
On Thursday, parents, students and community members gathered at Richmond City Hall to hear directly from the school district, city officials and scientists with the Department of Toxic Substances Control following the discovery of toxic chemicals under a high school campus.
Scientists say the st
ate has been testing the soil under streets in Richmond over the past few years. They discovered contamination under the street 500 feet from campus; that’s when they decided to test the soil at campus.
They tested six locations within school grounds and found levels of tetrachloroethylene, or pce, at five of those locations along cutting and 45th. They are now sampling the air to see the toxic chemicals have become airborne.
Those results are expected on Aug.12. They’ll be analyzed on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 and then a decision will be made whether allow students to attend school at Kennedy High or move class elsewhere.
