MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — A 46-year-old Jamestown, Tennessee, man was sentenced to 69 years in prison Wednesday for killing a Muncie man and dumping his body off a cliff in Tennessee in 2016. Delaware County Circuit Court Judge John M. Feick sentenced Ian J. Shelden after a jury convicted him o n April 30 of murder, obstruction of justice and auto theft. Prosecutors said Shelden killed 55-year-old Mark Trent with a tent stake after a dispute at Trent’s home in the 3600 block of West 32nd Street. Shelden cleaned the scene, put the body in a plastic tote and drove to Tennessee, where he dumped the remains off a mountain overhang. Trent was reported missing March 31, 2016, after not contacting family for a month. Police found his dogs abandoned and his Dodge Ram pickup missing. Investigators linked Shelden to the crime through ATM footage of him using Trent’s bank card. In October 2016, Shelden led investigators to the cliff in Fentress County, Tennessee. A medical examiner confirmed the bones belonged to Trent and ruled his death caused by blunt force trauma to the head. “In 2016, the Defendant brutally murdered Mark Trent and dumped his body off a cliff in Tennessee like a piece of garbage,” Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said. “By doing so, he thought he was off the hook and home free. He was wrong.” Court documents show Shelden said the killing happened after he rejected an advance by Trent. Shelden admitted striking Trent three times with a 2-foot tent stake before hiding the body in a closet and driving it across state lines.
