The annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn winners have been announced! The Greenest Block in Brooklyn, hosted by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG), is an annual contest promoting gardening and greener neighborhoods throughout the borough. The goal is to build community while encouraging residents to help the environment one block at a time. This year, hundreds of blocks from neighborhoods including Crown Heights, Flatbush, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bay Ridge and more participated in the competition. Winners are selected by expert judges, BBG staff, trustees and local horticulture professionals, who walk through neighborhoods, scoping out Brooklyn’s best green spaces. Source: Brooklyn Botanic Garden • Map: Annetta Stogniew First place: For the fourth time, a residence in Crown Heights is awarded the Greenest Block in Brooklyn. This year, first place goes to P.L.A.N.T., located on Lincoln Place between New York and Nostrand avenues. The group also won first place in 2024, 2022, and 2019. Pots of flowers line the stairs, while the front yard is filled with plants, gardening tools, an outdoor patio, and palm trees. What would otherwise be a typical city front yard has been changed into a personal garden overflowing with greenery. Second place (tie): Second place goes to Bay Ridge Blooms on Ridge Boulevard between 71st Street and Ovington Avenue, earning their share after placing third in 2024. The garden has a beautiful, almost medieval-looking entrance with red doors and symmetrical landscaping. Black benches sit on either side, matched by identical pots overflowing with plants. Vines climb the brick entryway, creating a space that looks like it came out of a movie. Also tied for second place is the LS Jefferson Ave Block Association on Jefferson Avenue between Lewis and Stuyvesant avenues. It features a park gate decorated with butterflies, covered in ivy, and lined with hanging pots filled with herbs. The gate also hangs a birdhouse and labels describing each plant. The project was created by the community and reflects the neighborhood’s collaboration. Third place: Third place goes to Canarsie Carailles, located on East 92nd Street between Avenue A and Church Avenue. The block almost looks like a forest because of the amount of greenery surrounding the homes. Flowers, herbs, trees, and plants fill the sidewalks and create what feels like a small ecosystem. The area is maintained, and the level of effort put into the gardens is clearly visible.
