A deputy police commissioner in New York has been charged in an attempted murder case that investigators allege she coordinated on with her son and husband. Jennifer Lackard and her son Chase were arrested at their Bronx home on Tuesday morning in connection with a June shooting just steps away from the Bronx Hall of Justice. The 49-year-old was listed as Mount Vernon’s deputy commissioner of public safety until the day of her arrest. Prosecutors in criminal court claimed the former high-ranking police official took part in a coordinated attempt to open fire on a group of people outside the Bronx criminal court complex on June 29. Lackard, her 20-year-old son and her husband James then allegedly sped off in the family van. In court on Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Keturah Ladd said her son was the trigger man. Text messages apparently sent between mother and son detail the planned getaway. “Be right out front when I leave,” her son allegedly texted. “When???? You can’t just stand out front. The timing has to be right,” Lackard wrote back. No one was injured in the shooting, but prosecutors said Chase Lackard is a known gang member and one of the people in the targeted group was part of a rival gang. Prosecutors also said the 20-year-old appeared in Bronx court on a prior gun charge the very same day he allegedly opened fire on the group outside. Until Tuesday, Jennifer Lackard had been listed as a deputy commissioner of wellness in Mount Vernon. The police department issued a statement saying it would not comment directly on the allegations against Lackard. “The allegations are unrelated to her duties with the Mount Vernon Police Department and do not stem from any conduct associated with the Department or the performance of her official responsibilities,” the statement read, in part. “Effective immediately, the City of Mount Vernon has terminated Mrs. Lackard’s employment.” Questions remain as to the whereabouts and charges Lackard’s husband may face. Prosecutors said he helped driver the van used to get to the courthouse. As of late Tuesday afternoon, only his wife had been formally charged. Chase Lackard was expected to be arraigned on a gun charge late Tuesday.
