San Jose police on Sunday arrested a suspected drunken driver who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian before fleeing the scene. The collision happened at about 2:16 a.m. Sunday in the area of Bernal Road and Via Del Oro in South San Jose, according to police. Citing a preliminary investig ation, police said a man behind the wheel of a Chevrolet pickup truck was heading eastbound on Bernal Road when he hit a pedestrian who was on Bernal Road at its intersection with Via Del Oro. The pedestrian, a man, succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene, police said. His identity will be released by the medical examiner’s office. The driver fled from the scene of the collision before officers arrived, police said, but officers later found him. He was determined to be under the influence of alcohol, arrested, and booked into jail for driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run.
