Energy’s up as Colts put on pads for first time in training camp
WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Indianapolis Colts training camp looked and sounded a little different Monday. The team put full pads on for the first time – the point every year during camp that football becomes real.
“I haven
’t put pads on in like eight months, so you got to get a little used to it, break them in,” receiver Josh Downs said.
The Colts put on the pads for the first time this training camp, giving a better idea of how this team will look when the season begins.
“I thought it went really well,” head coach Shane Steichen said. “A lot of physicality, good back and forth. Defense made some plays, offense made some plays, but it’s good to get out here in pads, banging around a little bit, and we go from there.”
“I mean, it’s the first day. Had some great things, some bad things, some things we need to clean up,” defensive lineman DeForest Buckner said. “Obviously, it’s been a while since the guys have been in pads, just like getting in position on tackling, wrapping up and little things like that.”
With the pads coming on, the team’s energy shifts into another gear.
“A lot, big time,” Steichen said. “I think the guys feel that when you come out here with the pads on. Obviously, it’s a lot more physical. Obviously, we’re taking care of each other too at the same time. It’s a long season, but we’ve got to be physical at the point of attack. I thought guys brought that today.”
“It looked pretty energetic to me,” kicker Spencer Shrader said. “I was watching some guys tackle each other. I’m like, ‘Oh, are we supposed to be doing that?’ I kind of had to get reminded real quick. But it was great energy out there, and it’s good to see the guys flying around.”
Quarterback Daniel Jones obviously didn’t take any hits despite it being the first day in pads. Still, he’s progressing really well each and every day getting better. Steichen said he’s liking what he’s seeing.
“I think he’s been doing a great job,” Steichen said. “He’s progressing every day, making plays, getting us in and out of the right play, which is huge. Completing passes, moving the offense down the field, making good decisions. So, we’ve just got to continue that through camp.”
“Daniel’s (Jones) been great. He’s been looking like he didn’t have an injury a couple months ago, so I’d say he’s leading us. He’s moving around good and he’s throwing the ball in the money, so he’s doing great,” Downs said.
One step closer to going live against the Baltimore Ravens Week 1.
