Officer injured in Friday east side shooting was a former IMPD deputy chief

INDINANAPOLIS (WISH) — Lawrence Deputy Police Chief Travis Cline confirmed to WISH-TV Saturday that the officer injured in an east side shooting Friday night was former Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Deputy Chief Bill Benjamin who now serves as a Lawrence Police Reserve lieutenant.

also confirmed the second victim in the shooting was Lamont Johnson, 53, and that the two shot at each other. Benjamin was hit in the ankle while Johnson was shot in the chest. Benjamin was reported as stable Friday night. Johnson was critical. Cline did not respond when asked what their conditions were Saturday.
The shooting happened at a woman’s house on the 1900 block of Kildare Avenue. Benjamin was meeting with the woman at the home before Johnson arrived and gunfire was exchanged, Cline confirmed.
Lawrence police said Friday IMPD would be leading the investigation. They have not yet released an update.
