Washington Square Mall vision plan to be unveiled Monday
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Washington Square Mall has largely sat vacant for years. Dust and weeds have taken over parts, and Republican City-County Councilor Michael Paul Hart is taking steps to reinvent its future. The Washington Square Mal
l Vision plan will be unveiled to the public this Monday.
“It takes time, but we are actively looking forward, and there’s a lot of different moving parts to all of it,” Hart said. “The development piece is one of it. The financing piece is another. Investors want to see what’s going on with the current infrastructure on the site.”
Hart said this comes after market analysis, a town hall and input from tenants and the community.
“We’re trying to take that sentiment from folks who were part of the community,” he said. “Who says, ‘we love the mall, we don’t want to see it go.’ The market analysis says you can’t keep the mall. It’s clearly not working. How do you find that middle ground? The sports complex is a big one that comes up. We talk about housing potential. You talk about retail space. Quick service type like poke bowl things of that nature.”
Tanya Harrison, a nearby resident is thrilled with the idea of revamping the mall.
“It really got me excited,” she said. “I can’t wait. It’s kind of rundown. I’m hoping to see Ulta or new retail stores. I’m excited about the growth.”
Hart said the intention is to present ideas to develop all 100 acres, which includes the parking lot space, in order to attract investors and developers.
Washington Square Mall General Manager Keith Lee said he’s on board for the changes. He pointed to the construction right next to the mall parking lot, where a Bank of America is set to be built.
“It’s exciting new development,” Lee said “I’m for the new,” said Lee. “The mixed use is a good thing for malls right now across the country and across the globe.”
Lee said he’s open to hearing more about the ideas.
The Washington Square Mall Vision plan is set to be unveiled Monday at 6 pm at the Warren Township School Administration building.
