I feel compelled to speak out about the latest plan for the Bonanza Park parcel. Here are my thoughts and worries as this plan moves forward. While most American small towns have a core of what we here call Old Town, theirs are not usually so historic, so intact and so carefully nurtured as ours . As most towns expand, structures which are taller and modern appear. It’s a common scenario. The difference in Park City is that we are a tourist town. Our continued success depends on our ability to remain unique and attractive to visitors. Those of us have lived here long enough worry about changes to our greatest economic driver — the ski season. We have recognized that our other viable asset was the arts in all its forms: performing, visual and interactive. It is a sustainable choice. When all of us in Park City bought the Bonanza Park parcel, we envisioned a space which would nurture our incredibly vibrant arts community and would avoid the tall buildings that a developer had proposed. However, the current plan shows tall buildings which hide the interior public spaces. This plan will not attract visitors or residents to explore further. Because this is an art town, my livelihood since 1971 has centered around the visual arts. I have created public art, owned a Main Street gallery, as well as a graphic design company, created exhibits at Park City Museum and the Silver Mine Adventure and have taught art classes and more. Before this plan becomes an irrevocable reality, there is still time to reconsider the direction that this area takes. Art is fun. Art is whimsical.
