After being a staple of the Castro neighborhood for more than 50 years, the owners of the Buffalo Whole Foods Market posted signs advising that the store will soon be closing. Long time customers of the store first noticed these signs go up on the windows in the last few days. Those signs were ad vertising 40% off everything and stating the store was “closing next week”. It was a shock and disappointment for people who work and live in the neighborhood. Faith Alcarez works at the perfume store across the street. She says she’s become pretty friendly with the workers at the store and will miss the bodega cat. “She’s at the owners house now. But it’s really sad to see her go. I’d always visit her on on my lunch,” Alcarez said. Buffalo Whole Foods has been here for 51 years. It was bought by the longtime owner of the nearby Noe Hill Market, Sami Bsisso, in 2021. But at about the same time that sale was completed he died of COVID-19. So, his two sons, Said and Hisham Bsisso took over both markets. But in May, they sold the Noe Hill Market. According to details of a fundraiser that’s posted on the Buffalo Whole Foods store window and loyal customers, they’ve had some recent challenges staying open.
