A 25-year-old woman died and another person was hospitalized Friday after they were shot on the campus of an adult school in Oakland, according to family and police. The shooting happened at about 9 a.m. at Parker Community Resource Center near Ney Avenue and Ritchie Street. The center houses the Oakland Unified School District’s adult school and Roots Community Health center. Family members identified the woman killed as Kimarii Mclemore, who had recently enrolled in a carpentry program. They said Mclemore told her mother before class that she didn’t feel safe going to school because of an issue with someone in the program. The second shooting victim was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition, police said. Investigators said the shooting was targeted, but they did not immediately identify a suspect or release a possible motive. “I’m very confident we’ll be able to determine the reason and the people responsible,” Oakland police Chief James Beere said. Our schools are oases where students feel safe and supported, and that goes for our students in adult education, as well. Immediately after the incident, the campus was locked down, and everyone else was secured safely inside classrooms and our front office. This kind of tragedy should never happen anywhere, especially not on a school campus.
