It’s been a great stretch of weather the last few days across Central and Eastern Kentucky and Friday was no exception as we put the wraps on the month of July. With high pressure hanging on across the eastern part of the Ohio Valley, we enjoyed more sunshine along with unseasonably low humid ity across the areas. Temperatures were a touch warmer with most locations topping out in the mid to upper 80s. Hopefully you had a chance to get outdoors and enjoy the nice weather as we’ve got some changes on the way the next few days. Our weather pattern will flip pretty quickly as we head into the weekend thanks to a return flow bringing moisture up from the Gulf, along with a slow moving area of low pressure dropping in from the northwest. The end result will be a decent chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms as we begin the month of August on Saturday. Unfortunately this will likely impact an outdoor plans you may have so keep that in mind. The dynamics are also in place for the potential of a few strong to severe storms late Saturday along the I-75 corridor and points westward. All modes of severe weather are on the table including a few isolated tornadoes thanks to the “spin” of the area of low pressure close by so stay weather aware Saturday. The Storm Prediction Center has parts of the Bluegrass Region down toward Lake Cumberland in a Level 2 severe risk (out of 5) with the area surrounding it in a Level 1 risk. The wave of low pressure will begin to weaken somewhat into Sunday as it slowly works to the east so look for more scattered showers and storms around the area. While it shouldn’t be an all day rain, there will be enough activity for it to be a bit disruptive for outdoor activities once again so plan ahead for that. Just like Saturday, any storms that develop will have the potential of producing some locally heavy rainfall, which could lead to some high water issues both days. Temperatures will be held in check a bit with afternoon highs around the 80 degree mark with plenty of humidity back around. While the overall chances should lessen a bit into Monday, you’ll need to keep the rain gear handy for some scattered activity through the daylight hours. Rolling through next week an upper level low will sit and spin over the region for a few days keeping the chances for mainly afternoon and early evening storms in the picture. While not everyone will see rain each day, there will be enough moisture to crank out occasional storms which could produce some locally heavy rain. This is a pretty typical pattern overall for early August, minus the cut-off low which should eventually drift eastward and take the isolated storm chances with it later in the week. Afternoon highs will stay pretty close to average with temperatures climbing back into the mid to upper 80s as the week progresses.
