An accidental discharge of a dry chemical fire extinguishing agent was discovered in Grenloch Lake in Washington Township, Gloucester County officials said Thursday. The discovery came after officials investigated a complaint filed with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP ) about a substance on the lake that was “white and filmy in appearance,” according to officials. Officials from the Gloucester County HazMat Response Unit, part of the Office of Emergency Management, responded alongside the Washington Township Fire Department. When they arrived, they observed the white substance. According to authorities, the investigation determined that an accidental discharge of an ABC dry chemical fire extinguishing agent occurred at the New Jersey Transit bus garage on Route 42 (Black Horse Pike). The material entered a nearby waterway before collecting in the southern section of Grenloch Lake. Officials at the scene coordinated with the NJDEP’s Bureau of Emergency Response and NJ Transit environmental officials during the investigation. Less than 25 pounds of the low-toxicity extinguishing agent was released, which officials said is expected to have minimal impact on aquatic life.
