It’s that time of the year when Barack Obama shares his summer playlist and reading list. The former president is known for sharing the books and songs that he has enjoyed over the sunny months, always surprising people with his selections and asking for recommendations. This year is no different as Obama posted 11 books that captured his attention these past months, as well as a slew of songs that he couldn’t get enough of. Among the novels that he read include “Kin” by Tayari Jones about two daughters raised without mothers in Honeysuckle, Louisiana. There’s also Ann Patchett’s “Whistler” about a woman who reunites with her stepfather who she hasn’t seen in 40 years. Obama also read Colson Whitehead’s final volume in his “Harlem Trilogy,” “Cool Machine.” The author recently sat down with Craig Melvin for his “Glass Half Full” podcast to discuss the novel. And when it came to his music selection, Obama treated his social media followers to plenty of hits. “Here are some of the songs I’ve been listening to this summer,” the former politician captioned his list. “It starts with a song Michelle and I love by Glen Hansard, a great musician who passed tragically this week. Our hearts go out to his family.” Obama’s taste in music is wide ranging from RB and rap with “Girl, Get Up” by Doechii and SZA, to rock with “Going Shopping” by The Strokes” to Latin music with Rawayana and Manuel Turizo’s “Inglés en Miami.” Obama also enjoys classics like Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Can’t Hide Love,” “Modern Love” by David Bowie and “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. Like most years, people paid particular attention to one or two tracks that made it on Obama’s playlist. Many were surprised (and loved) to see “Motion Party” by BossMan Dlow. “The thought of Obama singing ‘this a motion party you cannot get iiinnnn’ 😭😭😭😭😭,” one person commented, while another added, “Motion Party being on this list is one of the reasons why you’ll always be my President!! 😭😂.” Even BossMan himself was surprised, commenting, “It’s A Motion Party We Gotta Let Obama Innn.” Other artists that were included in his playlist also thanked him, including Sheryl Crow who wrote, “Man, I’m super honored that someone I admire so much is listening to a deep deep cut from my second record. Very cool, @barackobama!” Fred Hammond commented, “Heeeeyyy thank you sir. Truly an honor,” while Anderson .Paak added, “That’s my dog!” In the comment section of his post, Obama also asked people for suggestions. “I’m always looking for new songs to listen to, so please share any recommendations in the comments,” he wrote.
