Nearly three months after a stabbing at a Richardson bar sent four people to the hospital and ended with a police shooting, one of the victims is speaking publicly about the attack and her difficult recovery. Feliciana Cansino said she was working at Good Vibes Bar and Grill on May 7 when 28-year -old Stephen Kwembe entered with a knife. She said she had seen him only once before, when she asked him to leave the business. “When I looked up, I saw him. And he asked me, do you remember me? And I said, yes.” Cansino said Kwembe confronted her about refusing to serve him during his previous visit. “He said, you wouldn’t serve me then. And I said, I probably won’t serve you this time, so it’s best that you leave. At that point, he had already jumped on top of the bar and behind me; he said, no, tonight’s the night you’re going to die,” said Cansino. Police raced to Good Vibes after Kwembe called dispatch and threatened to kill people if officers did not kill him. In a 911 call, he’s heard saying, “When the cops come, tell them they must kill me. Because if they don’t, I’m going to kill as many people as I can.” Cansino said Kwembe stabbed her seven times. Police said he also seriously injured three of the four customers who intervened to help her. Cansino described the regular customers as more like family: “These guys risked their own lives to save mine, and I’m forever grateful to them.” Kwembe died shortly after the attack following a standoff with Richardson police. Cansino said her physical wounds are healing, but the emotional scars have been more difficult to overcome. She has not returned to work at Good Vibes. An outpouring of community support helped cover her initial care in the intensive care unit, but Cansino said bills from continuing doctor visits and therapy are mounting. “Being a bartender, I didn’t have medical insurance, and I just always wondered… you know, being in a hospital the bills are so large, and who’s responsible for all of this?” said Cansino. She said she continues to struggle to understand what led to the violence. “I ask myself what happened to this kid to make him so angry over what seems like nothing to me, just, I’m not going to give you anything to drink.” Cansino hopes to eventually resume her 15-year career as a bartender.
