Residents in San Bruno’s Belle Air Park have been expressing their frustration over what they say have been recent instances of Waymo autonomous vehicles dropping off passengers headed to San Francisco International Airport in their residential neighborhood. San Bruno city officials have received these complaints as well and have been in touch with Waymo to discuss possible solutions. In particular, residents said these Waymo vehicles have been heading to the 500 block of Seventh Avenue, which is the residential street city leaders say is closest to SFO. Neighbors said they began noticing this uptick in Waymo vehicles here about two weeks ago, and the frequency escalated. Six neighbors spoke with NBC Bay Area about their experiences, citing repeated instances of passengers dropped off with suitcases and all on their street, looking confused. “One of the gentlemen was trying to go to, I think he said Switzerland,” said neighbor Robert Riechel, who has lived in the neighborhood for twenty years. Riechel said he has spoken with several of these stranded passengers. “And either they’ve got to call somebody else, or one gentleman I talked to had 3 rolling suitcases, he said, ‘I’m gonna walk,'” Riechel recalled. Riechel estimated that would require at least a 20-minute walk down busy San Bruno Avenue. In terms of driving distance, this neighborhood is about 3 miles or ten minutes from the SFO terminals. Neighbors also said the Waymos have been stalling or parking in their neighborhoods for extended periods of time, blocking resident driveways. “This afternoon, two houses up, there was a Waymo parked across the driveway, and the young lady in the house, she wanted to get out, and we tried to holler at the machine or whatever and tell em’ ‘You’re blocking the driveway!'” Riechel recalled. One neighbor said she counted 29 Waymos in the neighborhood on Sunday. On Thursday, neighbors counted five. By Thursday evening, a Waymo spokesperson responded to NBC Bay Area with a statement, “Thanks to the rider’s in-app feedback and outreach to rider support, we were able to remedy the situation.” The statement continued, “We’re committed to learning from these moments and making the rider experience as seamless as possible. Neighbors said they will be watching to see what happens next. ...read more read less
