A man suspected of aggravated robbery is in the hospital after being shot by police officers early Thursday following a police chase that began in The Colony and ended in Dallas, Richardson Police say. In a statement to NBC 5, Plano Police said The Colony Police asked them to provide assistance a t a home in Plano related to the aggravated robbery case. Richardson Police said the Plano Police Department notified them just after 2 a.m. that they had lost sight of a vehicle suspected to be connected to an aggravated robbery in The Colony that entered Richardson near Custer and West Renner roads. Richardson officers spotted the driver and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over and led officers on a pursuit that continued into Dallas. According to Richardson Police, the suspect fired at pursuing officers during the chase and officers returned fire. The chase ended when the man’s vehicle became disabled near Alpha Road and Hughes Lane in Dallas. It was there that Richardson Police said officers gave the man commands to exit the vehicle with his hands raised. Police said the man got out of the vehicle and again took aim and fired at police, “prompting multiple officers to return fire.” The man was struck by gunfire and was removed from the vehicle by officers who began providing first aid. Police identified the man as 34-year-old Ryan Edward Drouin. Drouin was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. No officers were injured during the incident, police said. An NBC 5 crew at the scene observed a heavily damaged suspect vehicle riddled with bullet holes. At least two police vehicles also appeared to have been struck by heavy gunfire. Crews also observed what appeared to be a large firearm lying on the ground near the investigation scene. A significant police presence remains in the area as investigators process evidence at the scene. Because the original robbery incident occurred in The Colony, that agency is leading that robbery investigation and will be responsible for releasing any additional information regarding that case. Richardson Police said that because the officer-involved shooting occurred within the City of Dallas, the Dallas Police Department is leading the criminal investigation and that, consistent with established protocol, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting an independent investigation of the incident. In accordance with Richardson Police Department policy, the Richardson officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
