New Orleans is the only city included on World Monument Fund’s list, rather than singular historic landmark, recognizing the entire area as a priceless, living cultural landscape. The city plays an incredibly crucial role in U.S. history, most notably through the Louisiana Purchase, it’s function as a port city and the place where the U.S. defeated the British in the War of 1812. While these are incredibly historic moments, New Orleans’ history begins well before the U.S. As indigenous people inhabited the region for thousands of years, with the first arrival of European explorers during the 17th century. Before the U.S., New Orleans was under French rule, and then Spanish rule before being reclaimed by France. This makes the foundation of New Orleans vastly unique, as traditions and celebrations brought by the French are still carried out today, and Spanish architecture is a defining quality of New Orleans’ charming historic buildings. The introduction of other cultures are just as intrinsic to New Orleans’ today, as Creoles, which is a distinct cultural ethnicity of Caribbean, African and European descent, influenced the cuisine, music and art that is definitive of New Orleans. These heritages and their influence are still incredibly visible in New Orleans today, as people have held onto the traditions passed down from generations, with many actively working to preserve aspects of cultural ways of life. Yet New Orleans is at risk of losing its physical landscape, as rising sea levels, land loss and mass population relocation threatening the heritage conservation.
