Longtime Mauro Sheridan Assistant Principal Kerry Courcey will remain in Westville for her final year before retirement after all, now that the district has reversed her planned transfer to King/Robinson School. That change-up was included in an information-only personnel report at Monday’s Bo ard of Education meeting. Courcey, a 35-year teaching veteran, has worked at Mauro Sheridan School for the last 24 years. In June, New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) Supt. Madeline Negrón announced that she planned to transfer Courcey to an assistant principal role at King/Robinson School in Newhallville. That move prompted pushback from Mauro Sheridan parents and staffers, who urged the district to keep Courcey in place for her last year before retirement. New Haven state lawmakers Martin Looney and Pat Dillon later joined that call for the district to change course around moving Courcey so soon before her retirement. Monday’s personnel report shows that NHPS has now transferred Courcey back from King/Robinson to Mauro Sheridan, effective Aug. 19. The personnel report also shows that Regina Carini, who had been on tap to take over Courcey’s assistant principal role at Mauro Sheridan, has instead been transferred to an assistant principal role at Lincoln Bassett School. Meanwhile, Lincoln Bassett Assistant Principal Nellie Martinez has now been transferred into a brand new role of assistant principal at High School in the Community. And Jennifer Kaye, an instructional literacy coach at Lincoln Bassett, has been promoted to the role of assistant principal at King/Robinson — thereby filling the spot that Courcey had been intended for. “I am thrilled to return to Mauro Sheridan as assistant principal, where I’ve spent 24 of my 35 years with New Haven Public Schools!,” Courcey told the Independent on Tuesday. “I can’t think of a better place to finish my career. Sandy Kaliszewski and I make a fantastic team, and we are already planning for a great school year. Thank you to all the Mauro Sheridan teachers and staff who reached out with such sweet messages after the blue sheet was posted on Friday. I am so happy to be back with all of the Mauro Sheridan staff, students and families!” Courcey’s transfer wasn’t the only one that NHPS reversed course on on Monday. The district has also decided to undo the transfer of Benjamin Jepson School math teacher Thomas Fargeorge to a third-grade classroom at Ross/Woodward School — after the superintendent recognized that the transfer was “premature,” given that Fargeorge still has a pending criminal court case.
