A young boy was found dead and crews were searching for a missing girl after they were swept away in the Passaic River, according to a local mayor. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora said three children were in the water Wednesday evening at the Dundee Island Park boat launch, but an 11-year-old girl was able to get out safely. Crews searched the water for hours for two 10-year-olds, boy and a girl. The boy was the brother of the girl who was able to come out, and the girl is a friend of theirs, according to Lora. Just before 11 p.m., the body of the young boy was discovered about 50 feet from where he fell in. His sister, who was home recovering, said he may have saved her life, according to the mayor. “As he was going under, he pushed her, and she ended up by the rocks, and she climbed out,” said Lora. “The mother is obviously overwhelmed with grief, as we are as a community, but we must stand strong together in support of the family because this is about the family, and right now all of our efforts, all of our resources, are concentrated on locating the little girl.” The search for the missing girl was ongoing, but Lora said what was once a rescue missing has turned into a recovery mission based on how long she had been missing. It was not immediately clear how the children got into the water. The Wallington Fire Department said in a Facebook post that their marine units were conducting a water search in the river.
