A sixth person has died in connection to the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in a Manhattan neighborhood. The New York City Health Department confirmed the death of the sixth person Tuesday. In all, 90 people have tested positive for the disease as a result of the cluster found on the Upper E ast Side, six of whom were still in the hospital. It comes days after it was found that more than 50 buildings on the Upper East Side were on a list of addresses that tested positive for the live legionella bacteria, according to the health department. While more addresses could still be added to the list, the health department said, it did not mean any of the ones listed were the source of the Legionella exposure in the current cluster. A total of 77 cooling towers at 75 buildings were positive for legionella in initial testing. While it still could be weeks before it is determined which cooling tower (or towers) made people sick, officials feel confident the source has already been eliminated given that there have been no new cases since July 15. The cooling towers that tested positive for the live bacteria have been fully cleaned, the Health Department said. The department said it would continue to update the addresses on its website as appropriate.
