The Park City Sailing Association will host the first Jordanelbow Regatta on Saturday.  The race takes its name after the arm-like shape of the Jordanelle Reservoir. Sailors will race around the outskirts of the reservoir, rather than parts of its interior, where the association typically ho lds races. Park City Sailing wants to showcase the uniquely-shaped and expansive Jordanelle Reservoir, and make viewing easier for fans who will be on land.  Sailboats of any kind and sailors of any level are welcome to register for the regatta for $40. Boats and equipment are also available for a $100 charter fee.  The association will be hosting a “party of the year” at the Jordanelle State Park’s Lake View Center as the race ends.  “For many years we have wanted to do a pursuit race around the entire lake,” said Scott VerMerris, Park City Sailing Association director of sailing and community engagement. “So we’re really excited. … Even if you don’t sail, this is meant to be spectator friendly, and regattas are typically tough in that way because it’s really hard to be a part of the action or spectate when it’s happening way out in the middle of the water, unless you have a boat.” The association will stagger the starts in the race depending on boat type. They will hand out awards for each boat type and the crowds can vote on a best spirit award.  There were 15 entries into the regatta as of Tuesday morning. The boats among those entries are J/22s, open multihulls and Ultimate 20s.  “Whether they’re members or sailors and know about us or not, I’d love to have people come join the party,” VerMerris said. “Watch a sailboat racing event and then participate in the party. … For me, the more the merrier.” VerMerris said the biggest challenges of putting on the regatta will be weather-related. It can be hard to maintain strong winds along the outskirts of the reservoir. If all goes to plan, VerMerris envisions the sailors taking about two-and-a-half hours to round the Jordanelle Reservoir.  Sailors can still register for Saturday’s regatta on the association’s website. VerMerris said there will be food for fans to purchase at the Lake View Center.  “The mix of people is exactly what this event is all about for me,” VerMerris said. “I’m happy about that, but we still need to rally more people.
