A man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for assaulting a Newark police officer in 2022, an attack that forced the officer into retirement. According to the Delaware Department of Justice, Rodney Duffy, 39, was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to one count of assault and one count of re sisting arrest with force. The incident occurred on Dec. 13, 2022, when police responded to a shoplifting call at the Acme store on Suburban Drive in Newark, Delaware. Prosecutors said that when the officer arrived and tried to detain Duffy, he began assaulting the officer, repeatedly striking him in the head and causing serious injuries. According to officials, Duffy also tried to remove the officer’s gun from its holster during the attack. Prosecutors said the officer was forced to retire because of his injuries. “There is no justification whatsoever for the defendant’s brutal, impulsive, and callous actions,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “Our thoughts are with the victim, whose injuries forced him to end a yearslong career in law enforcement. I’m grateful to the police and trial team who secured justice for his attacker.”  ...read more read less
