The Office of Nighttime Economy announced the initiative July 27, promoting the SAFE Bar Network’s no-cost training program for hospitality workers. The program provides on-site instruction tailored to nightlife businesses and covers active-bystander intervention, harassment prevention, conflict de-escalation and workplace culture. Participating businesses receive SAFE Bar certification and join a national network of hospitality establishments committed to promoting safer environments for employees and customers. According to the city, 24 New Orleans businesses currently participate in the SAFE Bar Network. During the first half of 2026, the organization trained staff at 10 local venues, providing de-escalation and intervention training to 152 hospitality workers. SAFE Bar Network estimates those trained employees will collectively serve more than 265,000 patrons this year. “Providing no-cost violence de-escalation training for nightlife venues is a no-brainer and sends a clear message that a business values safety for all and is willing to cultivate an environment where safety, respect, and community are a priority,” said Michael Ince, director of the Mayor’s Office of Nighttime Economy. City officials said the training is intended to equip hospitality workers with practical skills to recognize potentially dangerous situations, intervene appropriately and help prevent incidents before they escalate. The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office also endorsed the program as part of a broader crime prevention strategy. “Sustainable public safety cannot rest solely on the shoulders of police officers and prosecutors,” District Attorney Jason Rogers Williams said. “If we are serious about reducing crime over the long term, we must move beyond a model that only reacts to violence after it occurs and invest in one that prevents it from happening in the first place.” The SAFE Bar Network program complements other initiatives led by the Office of Nighttime Economy, including harm reduction education, hospitality worker transportation assistance, sound management resources and business support programs.
