Thunderstorm complex threat in play into early Tuesday
Jul 27, 2026
After a frustrating final weekend of July weather wise across the area with plenty of cloud cover along with a few showers and storms, it was a warm and humid start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky. After some morning fog burnt off, sunshine helped push afternoon highs into the
upper 80s and low-90s with humidity levels making it feel hotter than that. Heading into the evening and overnight hours, a thunderstorm complex is expected to drop across through the Ohio Valley, potentially bringing some active weather to parts of the commonwealth.
The challenging part of these late July set-ups is the model data have a tendency to struggle with the placement of these thunderstorm complexes as they fan out to the southeast, so this lessens the overall confidence of where the worst of the weather may be. Depending on the track and if it holds together, some folks could potentially avoid storms completely, while others see strong winds and heavy rain. That being said, the potential exists for strong to severe storms especially across the northern half of the state through the late evening hours and into the early hours of Tuesday. Damaging winds will be the primary threat and the complex should weaken slightly as it moves to the south. The Storm Prediction Center has much of Central and Eastern Kentucky in a Level 2 risk (out of 5) for damaging winds with a Level 1 risk across the extreme southern part of the state. Make sure and stay weather aware Monday evening and overnight.
A cold front will be dropping through the state on Tuesday so Southeastern Kentucky has the best chance of seeing some additional thunderstorms along the leading edge of the front. It should be another warm to hot day depending on location as afternoon highs reach the upper 80s with a few low-90s down south. This front will help sweep the humidity and some of the hot air out of the region into the mid-week.
High pressure will build into the region on Wednesday so we are looking at a quiet stretch of weather for a few days across the commonwealth. With plenty of sunshine around, afternoon highs should reach the mid-80s, which is slightly below average for this time of the year and the humidity levels will be lower thanks to a north wind bringing drier air in. Conditions should be nice for any outdoor plans you may have and it will be a good opportunity to spend a little time outside given the pleasant late July weather that’s expected.
We should close out the month of July on a dry note Friday with more sunshine and afternoon highs climbing back into the upper 80s. A wave of low pressure looks to slide by to our southwest as we kick off August this weekend, bringing a return chance of showers and thunderstorms to the area as a result. Of course the timing could be better with the rain and storm chances falling on a weekend as summer vacation for area school kids rapidly winds down. Some of the rain could be a touch heavy given the amount of moisture around and the slow movement of any storms that develop so that’s something to keep in mind. With some cloudiness and showers around, afternoon highs should be held in check a bit into the low to mid-80s.
