An off-duty Philadelphia police officer is accused of shooting and killing his uncle during a fight involving family members inside a Northampton County home. Kenroy Cummings, 25, is charged with criminal homicide and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer. The ordeal began on Friday, July 24, at a home along the 1200 block of Old Gate Road in Allen Township, Pennsylvania. A boy told investigators he was at the home when his family member, identified by officials as 27-year-old Shakair Moncrieffe, began to threaten him. Feeling frightened, the boy contacted his other family members, including Kenroy Cummings, according to the criminal complaint. The boy told police multiple family members, including Cummings and Moncrieffe, then entered the home. While the boy and a woman stood outside the house, they heard a loud noise coming from inside, according to the criminal complaint. The boy said he looked through a window and spotted Moncrieffe pushing Cummings as he tried to stand up. The boy told investigators he then entered the home and punched Moncrieffe twice in the face as Moncrieffe “squared up” with him, according to the criminal complaint. Cummings then pulled out a gun and shot Moncrieffe in the head multiple times, investigators said. In a later interview, Cummings claimed the shooting was in self-defense as he believed Moncrieffe was trying to reach for his gun, according to the criminal complaint. Cummings fled the scene in an orange Kia Forte and police received reports of both a domestic assault as well as shots fired at the home, investigators said.   Moncrieffe was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg where he was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m. on Friday. Investigators said he suffered six gunshot wounds to the head and one to the right wrist. His death was ruled a homicide. Pennsylvania state troopers who responded to the scene spotted Cummings driving the Kia Forte north on Schoenersville Road around 2:10 p.m. that afternoon, investigators said. The troopers activated their lights and sirens and pursued Cummings who was speeding over 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic, according to the criminal complaint. At one point during the chase, Cummings failed to stop at a stop sign and continued speeding, investigators said. Cummings finally returned to the home on Old Gate Road and told the pursuing officers he was in possession of a handgun, according to the criminal complaint. Police said his weapon, a Taurus G2C 9mm, fell onto the pavement from the driver’s compartment. Cummings was then taken into custody without incident. Cummings is being held in Northampton County Prison after his bail was denied. His next preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 6, 2026. Online court records don’t list an attorney who could speak on his behalf. Officials confirmed that Cummings is a Philadelphia police officer who was off duty at the time of the incident. “The Philadelphia Police Department is aware that an off-duty PPD officer, Kenroy Cummings, was involved in a shooting incident on July 24th, 2026, in Northampton County PA, which is currently under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau has been notified and has initiated the appropriate administrative investigation,” a spokesperson for the department wrote in a statement to NBC10. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told NBC10 Cummings has been with the department for about two years and works in the 24th District. “From all indications I get, he was a good police officer here,” Bethel said. “I believe he worked in the Kensington area. So, based on all the reports I get from the men and women here in the field and my command staff, he was a decent officer. Bethel told NBC10 the department is starting the process of firing Cummings.
