Preparations are quietly intensifying for another landmark event that North Texas hasn’t hosted since gas was 30 cents a gallon and the Dallas North Tollway was five years from opening. The 2027 PGA Championship, which will be played in 10 months at Frisco’s PGA of America, will be the first men’s major championship in D-FW since 1963. Some 950 miles from where the Masters is unfolding this week in Augusta, Ga., the logistics, fan experience and revenue strategy are being shaped for what is being billed as the largest, most significant golf event in the history of Texas. Expect 200,000 visitors to the 660-acre PGA Frisco property, upward of 400 private planes to descend on D-FW, and more than a $100 million economic impact for the community. A half-billion people worldwide in some 170 countries will watch the culmination of preparation that’s been in the works for nearly a decade. While the event does not tee off until May 20 of next year, it’s beginning to come into focus, with ticket registration now open. For Frisco, heralded as Sports City, USA; and the PGA of America, whose doors opened four years ago with a commitment to host major tournaments, success requires the coordination of numerous civic, sports and business stakeholders.
