A 43-year-old West Havener died after a Thursday night scooter crash on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard.
The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) posted a press release at 10:13 p.m. Friday on the social media site X about the fatal crash.
At the time of the press release, police did not know the iden
tify of the victim. On Sunday at 1:11 p.m., the NHPD posted on X that the victim has been identified as Hector Aponte of West Haven.
Friday’s press release states that, on Thursday at around 9:33 p.m., city police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Ella T. Grasso Boulevard in the Hill for the report of “a male in the roadway.”
Upon arrival, officers found the victim — later identified as Aponte — “in the roadway with significant injuries. Fire Department personnel also responded but the male was ultimately pronounced deceased.”
“It appears he was riding a Razor-style scooter,” the press release continues, “but officers are investigating to determine what occurred.”
The Crash Reconstruction Unit responded and has assumed responsiblity for the investigation.
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
Thursday’s fatal scooter crash comes after a 35-year-old man from Bridgeport suffered “significant injuries” following a motorcycle crash on Grand Avenue near East Street last Sunday, July 19, and after a 34-year-old New Havener named Omar Ryan died in a motorcycle crash on State Street early in the morning of Saturday, July 11.
