A 45-year-old man police identified as the shooter in a deadly Bronx shooting that killed 12-year-old Jacob Freytes was led out of the 44th Precinct late Sunday afternoon. Police said Jacob Freytes was shot and killed Saturday evening in Mount Eden, and two men were wounded. Authorities said t he shooting happened in front of a deli on Elliot Pl. after an unrelated fight involving multiple people ended in gunfire. Security video shows Freytes standing by on his bike moments before a man fired the shots. Police arrested William Ferrer, who did not respond to questions from reporters as detectives led him out of the station house. Neighbor Martha Rosa said people in the community are grieving the loss of the 12-year-old. “Oh he was so wonderful… he respects his elders always,” she said. A memorial for Freytes has been growing in the neighborhood, as friends and neighbors described him as an innocent child. “He’s 12-years-old. He was an innocent little kid. He’s not from the streets. He’s an awesome kid,” family friend Jasmine Rosario said. Rosa said the circumstances of the shooting were difficult to comprehend. “it’s just unthinkable. I mean, he’s just riding his bike like any other child,” Rosa said. The United Bodegas of America called on lawmakers to pass stricter measures for people who carry illegal firearms. “We are just tired of having these press conferences speaking about gun violence. Whether it’s in a bodega, whether it’s in a cab, it’s gun violence on our streets,” UBA Co-founder Fernando Mateo said. Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D-New York City) also addressed the shooting. “Our thoughts are with the family. I know it’s a top priority for our NYPD and our administration to find out who’s responsible for this horrific act of violence. But beyond that, how to ensure that we never become numb to this kind of pain,” Mamdani said. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the NYPD will do everything in its power to seek justice for Freytes and his family.
