The Pierre Rescue and Dive Squad recently (July 20, 2026) conducted water rescue training operations on the Missouri River, focusing on search, recovery, and dive boat positioning techniques. The training scenario involved a simulated jumper from the Pierre/Fort Pierre Bridge using a water rescue tr aining dummy. The dummy was deployed from the bridge into the river, and crews worked through a coordinated search and recovery operation. Training objectives included locating the target using side-scan sonar and active target scanning equipment. After successfully identifying the target’s location, the dive boat maneuvered into position upstream and utilized a three-anchor deployment to securely hold the vessel in the river current. A diver was then deployed to the target and successfully completed the recovery. Pierre Rescue recently added a new 26-foot Lake Assault rescue boat to its fleet. Powered by twin 200-horsepower Mercury outboard motors, the vessel is equipped to support a wide range of emergency response missions, including fire suppression, dive operations, towing, and advanced sonar scanning capabilities. The new rescue boat enhances the department’s ability to respond safely and effectively to emergencies on the Missouri River and other area waterways.
