Fitness is about more than breaking a sweat for members of Deathrow Bootcamp, a Dallas-based outdoor workout group that has built a community around encouragement, resilience and support. Known for its high-energy workouts, Deathrow Bootcamp features hill sprints, bodyweight circuits and a live D J. The free classes are held Thursday nights and Saturday mornings and welcome everyone from beginners to elite athletes, including professional boxing coach Derrick James. The bootcamp was founded by Coach Jey, an Afghanistan veteran and former Dallas firefighter. Over the past year, the group has grown to more than 8,000 participants. Coach Jey said the goal is not only to help people become stronger athletes, but also to create a family that motivates and supports one another. The group’s mantra, “Surviving Deathrow,” serves as a reminder that if participants can make it through the workout, they can overcome whatever life throws their way. The next Deathrow Bootcamp is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Dallas. This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC DFW.
