CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bank of America stadium is getting a billion dollar makeover. The new digs are renewing the conversation about whether the Queen City can host a Super Bowl. “We had the FIFA Club World Cup last summer. So that’s something that they can point to show that we have the capaci ty and that people like to come and visit Charlotte,” Tyler Albrecht, Charlotte Resident said. In a fireside chat with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell this week, Panthers owner David Tepper made his creative pitch for the NFL’s biggest event. “We have more million dollar homes closer to the stadium than any other stadium in the country. I noticed at Augusta they give those homes up to the extent that we may not have all the luxury hotels,” Tepper said. Commissioner Goodell says he thinks Charlotte could host a smaller nfl event. He doesn’t believe the city has the hotel rooms to accommodate the Super Bowl. “This is built for a draft,” Goodell said. “The location of Charlotte in general. The way the draft is now it’s close to a million people attending from all over the world.” In a statement to WCCB, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority says in part “Conversations like these are a reminder of what it takes to compete for events of this scale….It’s about building a destination that can deliver the experience event organizers expect while creating long-term benefits for Charlotte’s visitor economy and our community.” Some residents say hosting a Super Bowl could help motivate the city to make improvements. “We already are kind of battling with the fact that there’s so many newcomers, new jobs and things happening that we have to do something about our transportation. So I think that could be a good push,” Xavier, Charlotte Resident said. Some residents believe the city has the potential to be a Super Bowl host in the future. “Moving here recently, I’ve heard a lot of people that have lived in Charlotte say the changes they’ve seen in the city from even the last five years have been significant. So I think with that amount of time, it’s very possible. Commissioner Goodell agrees. “Everytime I come back here, it’s different than when I left it last time,” Commissioner Goodell said. “So, I think that if that growth continues that’s probably somewhere down the line in the future.” The stadium renovations are scheduled to be completed by 2030.   ...read more read less
