Peter Dietrich Credit: Courtesy Peter Anthony Dietrich, MD died peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the Residence at Shelburne Bay in Shelburne, Vt. Peter was a longtime resident of Shelburne. He worked as a chest radiologist and an emeritus professor in radiology at the University of Vermont Medical Center until his retirement. Peter was born in Akron, Ohio, on September 10, 1937, to Ellen (Elin Johnson) and Carl Dietrich. He grew up in Akron, where he attended a rural high school. He continued his studies at Yale University after completing a postgraduate year at the Lawrenceville School. While at Yale, he was introduced to Eileen “Sandy” Scott, whom he married in 1961. Peter went on to earn a degree in medicine at Case Western Reserve. While there, he was selected to the AOA Honor Society. After graduating from medical school, Peter signed on to an internship at Cleveland City Hospital. While in Cleveland, he and his wife welcomed their first daughter, Elise. Peter then trained at Stanford University in diagnostic radiology, eventually accepting a junior faculty position there. During this time in California, his daughters Lorna and Amy were born. When Peter was drafted into the Vietnam War, he and his family moved to Virginia, where he worked at Fort Belvoir training field doctors in radiology. Peter became a major and was given a consulting position at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Peter spent his final year in service traveling Europe, evaluating radiology computer systems for the VA. Peter’s mentor from Case Western, Dr. Lawrence Weed, later offered Peter the opportunity to relocate with his family to Burlington, Vt., to help him research and design a modern radiology record system, which eventually became integrated into the University of Vermont’s system. In 1973, Peter and Sandy built a home in Shelburne, Vt., and Peter became a staff chest radiologist and professor of radiology at Fanny Allen Health Care Center. In his later years, Peter worked at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center, now part of the UVM Medical Center, where his primary role was training radiology residents, which he enjoyed immensely. Peter was awarded Teacher of the Year multiple times throughout his career, most recently in 2022. In his free time, Peter enjoyed fly-fishing with his wife, Sandy, and her identical twin, Lorna; hiking Mount Philo with family and friends; and birding. He could identify most birds by their song and delighted in quizzing his friends and family. He was a gifted storyteller and took joy in sharing his fictional “Sam and George” stories with his children and other young family members. He also liked baking his family bread recipe, making sauerkraut with his niece and tending his prolific vegetable garden. Peter was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Christine Freitag; and his wife, Sandy. He is survived by his brother, Carl Dietrich; his three daughters, Elise Seraus of Winooski, Vt., Lorna Cummings (Paul) and Amy Dietrich, both of Camden, Maine; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caregivers, family and friends who were especially supportive of Peter in his final years — Martha Chevalier, Val Williams, Pat Thornton, Curtis Green, and Amy Freitag and her children. The family would also like to thank Bayada Hospice for their excellent end-of-life care. No service is planned at this time.
