Big rig crash blocks lanes on I238 in San Leandro after driver falls asleep
Jul 24, 2026
A big rig crash is impacting traffic Friday morning on Interstate 238 in San Leandro, where lanes are expected to remain blocked for several hours.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly before 3:20 a.m. on northbound I-238 just before the interchange with Interstate 880.
According to CHP, the truck, which was carrying more than 40,000 pounds of fruit, struck a sand barrel after the driver fell asleep. The impact caused the barrel to explode, scattering sand across the freeway. The truck’s axle was also ripped from underneath the vehicle.
Officials said the crash damaged the center median and left sand and fuel in the roadway.
No injuries were reported.
The connector ramp from northbound I-238 to southbound I-880 was closed, while the right and center lanes on northbound I-880 remained blocked, according to information shared by Bay Area 511.
Caltrans crews estimate it could take past noon to reopen the affected lanes. Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes.
