As Comic-Con takes over downtown, the San Diego Public Library is joining the celebration with a limited-edition library card. The collectible library card was designed by local artist Keithan Jones, founder of KID Comics and creator of Black Com!x Day. Jones said he wanted to make the card inviting but also have that comic book whimsical sci-fi feel to it. “I have a family of aliens, literal aliens, from outer space visiting the San Diego library to emphasize that anyone is welcome at the facility, but also it gives it that Comic-Con vibe because you have a lot of cosplayers walking around in costume,” Jones said. He said he also wanted to give it the “California feel,” so he knew he had to add the sunny background, the trolley, palm trees, and, of course, the ever-present seagull. You are welcome in our spaces, and we want you in our spaces; that’s part of the reason that the design spoke to us,” said Oscar Gittemeier, program manager at the San Diego Public Library.
