Joel Dubé Credit: Courtesy Joel E. Dubé passed away peacefully at the University of Vermont Medical Center on July 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Joel was born on October 30, 1952 in Edmundston, New Brunswick, to Simeon and Mattie (Michaud) Dubé and raised in Mada waska, Maine. After graduation from Madawaska High School and a period of service in the U.S. Army, Joel graduated from the University of Maine, Orono and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. His work with Farmers Home brought him to Vermont and evolved into a long career as a commercial lender with the Franklin Lamoille Bank, Bank North and Northfield Savings Bank. He liked nothing better than getting a “big deal” done. Joel met his future wife working on just such a deal. Joel and Priscilla (Bondy) were married on June 17, 1989, and later welcomed Carolyn Bondy Dubé and Simeon Eugene Dubé to complete the family. Joel was passionate about his family, photography and golf. He was active with Cary and Sim as they were growing up, and, as his passion for photography developed into more than a hobby, he spent many hours at riding rings, hockey rinks, baseball diamonds, on hikes and at various dog events, taking pictures and capturing memories for the family. He was so proud of them as they matured into successful, hardworking and kind adults. A member at Vermont National Country Club, Joel spent many happy hours on the golf course and had two holes-in-one to his credit. In recent years Joel traveled to take photographs in Maine, the Badlands, Death Valley, Texas, West Virginia, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Washington, Alaska and other sites in the United States. He also went to Iceland and Patagonia. It was on these trips he met and engaged with professional photographers who taught him so much. He established Mad Owl Photography as a way to share his pictures with others (madowlphotovt.com). Joel is survived by his wife/partner and best friend, Priscilla; daughter, Cary; son, Sim, and Sim’s partner, Hannah Benoit; sisters, Rachel Ouellette, Leola Moss and Eloise Batchelder (Charlie); brothers Lionel (Peggy) and Elden (Sara); many nieces, nephews and their children; and his in-laws, Elizabeth Bondy (William Dunn) and David Bondy (Debra) and their families. Joel was predeceased by his parents, Simeon and Mattie; brothers Gerald and Guilford; brother-in-law William Moss; and his sister-in-law Marie-Claire. The family would like to thank Joel’s best man and longtime friend, Paul; “Pizza Night” partners of over 30 years, Paul and Lisa; all his golf buddies, especially Eric and Drew; his photography guru, Kurt; and his whole family and circle of friends who have been there for him in ways that made his life full and rich. Also, thanks to the many people at UVMMC who cared for Joel and the rest of us during his short and intense illness. There will be a gathering at a future date to celebrate Joel’s life.
