Philadelphia police said they are investigating a string of vehicle thefts after recovering about 30 stolen Honda vehicles over the past month. Earlier this month, NBC10 visited a lot on 3rd Street and Westmoreland Street and found multiple stolen Honda vehicles that had been dismantled. On Wedne sday, July 22, our crew found yet another stolen Honda that had been torn apart at that same lot. According to Jasmine Reilly with the Philadelphia Police Department, the Major Crimes Unit is investigating whether these thefts are connected. After finding the stolen Honda on Wednesday, NBC10 called Philadelphia police. When officers arrived, they confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen and had it towed away. Neighbors said they are frustrated by the illegal activity happening so close to their homes. “It’s not a good thing. It needs to be stopped,” said Rod Daffley, a North Philadelphia resident. “Parts everywhere, there are cars being left abandoned all back there and there’s an elementary school right here. It’s not good for the kids,” said Rod Daffley, a North Philadelphia resident. Police said the suspect or suspects are not targeting a specific area. Earlier this week, a hiker discovered three stripped Honda CRVs along Tacony Creek Park Trail. Neighbors said they are staying vigilant. “We have the whole block with cameras,” said Alex Valentin, a North Philadelphia resident. Police are urging drivers to take steps to protect their vehicles. “You want to make sure you don’t leave the keys inside the vehicle. Lock your car, park it in well-lit areas,” Reilly said. Investigators also believe devices that can copy or clone key fobs may be playing a role in some of these thefts. No arrests have been made. Anyone who believes they may be a victim is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department as soon as possible. ...read more read less
