A man suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by an Egg Harbor Township police vehicle while walking in the rain, officials said.
According to the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, the incident happened at about 12:07 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, on the Black Horse Pik
e near Old Egg Harbor Road in Egg Harbor Township.
Police said an investigation revealed that Officer William Danz was on duty and driving a marked patrol vehicle eastbound on the Black Horse Pike when the vehicle struck a man crossing the roadway near the intersection.
After the impact, police said Danz immediately stopped his vehicle and rendered aid to the man until emergency medical services arrived at the scene.
The man, later identified as Alvin Powers, a 58-year-old male from Pleasantville, was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said Powers was crossing the roadway outside a marked crosswalk, despite a crosswalk being located nearby. Police also shared that he was wearing dark clothing in a poorly lit area during heavy rain.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being handled by Sgt. Edward Stearns and Officer Kevin Brady of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
In a statement, Chief Fred Spano reminded pedestrians to use caution while crossing roadways, stay alert and avoid distractions, make eye contact with drivers before crossing, wear bright clothing or carry a flashlight at night, and use marked crosswalks whenever they are nearby.
