Firefighters are making progress against the Rumsey Fire in Colusa County, utilizing a coordinated air and ground attack to reach 10% containment Monday on the 450-acre blaze in the Sacramento Valley area. The fire, driven by light but swirling winds, has made runs to the northeast, east and sout heast. Officials with the Cal Fire Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit reported a 75-acre spot fire that crossed Sand Creek Road on the right flank. Airtankers laid heavy retardant lines at the head of the fire and along the right flank to box in the flames. Four bulldozers worked to tie in control lines off the retardant drops, making good progress at the head of the fire and wrapping around the spot fire that jumped the road. On the left, or western, flank, helicopters focused on targeted water drops. Following sunset, two Cal Fire Hawk helicopters extended the agency’s aerial firefighting capabilities by conducting night water-dropping operations. Firefighters expected the fire’s behavior to moderate into the night. Environmental conditions began improving during the evening, with humidity levels at the scene rising from 27.8% to 33.1% over a two-hour period.
