CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer is charged with simple assault after being accused of shoving a teenager off a bicycle. Officer Malcolm Joseph is currently on unpaid administrative leave. According to warrants, 17-year-old Evan Brown says he and his friends were riding bikes on West Palmer Street off Mint Street in Uptown around two AM Friday morning. He says some of them were doing “wheelies” as they passed CMPD cars at a crash scene. CMPD says body camera shows Officer Joseph make a u-turn and follow the bicycles, before opening his door and shoving Brown off his bike. CMPD says body cam video also shows the officer bragging about what he did. The teen says he suffered several large scrapes on his hip, upper back, and arm. Detectives say Officer Joseph admitted to shoving the teen off the bike, and acknowledged that he assaulted the teen. Joseph is now out of jail on $2,500 bond. ...read more read less
