A quiet North Texas neighborhood became the scene of a large police response after gunfire erupted at a short-term rental property where police say a birthday party was being held. Little Elm police said officers responded just before midnight Friday to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots in th e Villages of Woodlake subdivision. Police said multiple people under the age of 18 were seen running from the scene. At least one person was shot and drove themselves to a hospital, according to police. The person is expected to recover. William Hudson, who has lived in Little Elm for 18 years, described returning to a neighborhood “bathed in lights and sirens.” “It was kind of a shock to come home to,” Hudson said. Miguel Blanco lives next door to the property, which police said had been converted into a short term rental and was booked for a birthday party. Blanco told NBC 5 that his grandson heard teenagers arguing outside and saying, “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot.” Video shared with NBC 5 by neighbors showed the law enforcement response along White Oak Drive. Police from Frisco and the Denton County Sheriff’s Office assisted Little Elm police. “That was a lot more than what we’d normally see,” Hudson said. Little Elm regulates short-term rentals under rules approved six years ago. The town’s ordinance prohibits parties and events at short-term rentals, and town officials said they are reviewing potential enforcement following the shooting. Hudson said teenagers had notified him and other neighbors earlier in the day that they planned to have a party, a gesture he said he appreciated. “They came across as particularly conscientious,” Hudson said. Hudson said he had not previously experienced problems with short-term rentals in the neighborhood. “I got the impression that it would probably have been somebody that shouldn’t have been at the party or just a poor choice of guest,” he said.
