As catastrophic flooding continues to devastate communities in Texas, two local organizations have stepped up to take in displaced animals. On Monday, the Brandywine Valley SPCA and Animal Adoption Center, in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, welcomed a rescue flight carrying animals from shelters impacted by floodwaters. The Wings of Rescue flight carried dogs and cats that were already in shelters and available for adoption before the flooding. “Even with our own kennels full, when the call came asking for us to step up, we had to say yes,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO. “We are grateful to have multiple locations where we can welcome these pets and give them the promise of a new life and we know we can count on our community to support this important mission.” Officials said Austin Pets Alive!, located just miles from some of the hardest-hit areas in Texas, has been coordinating emergency response efforts and serving as a hub for shelters that have been damaged orforced to evacuate. Moving homeless shelter animals out of the area is allowing Texas shelters to focus on reuniting pets found after the flooding with their owners, supporting impacted pet families and repairing damage caused by the disaster. “We are incredibly grateful to work alongside an outstanding network of animal welfare organizations like Brandywine Valley SPCA and Austin Pets Alive!,” said Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. “The pets affected by the devastating aftermath of the Texas floods represent one part of this tragedy that we can help address by working together collaboratively.” The pets from the flight have been relocated to Brandywine Valley SPCA campuses and the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey, where they’ll begin their search for new homes on Tuesday, July 21.
