A new law affecting e-bike owners takes effect in New Jersey on Sunday. Under the new law, all e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. To operate an e-bike, riders must be at least 15 years old and have either an e-bike license or a valid driver’s license. It is important to note that an individual may neither apply for nor receive a motorized bicycle license during any suspension or revocation of their driving privileges. Only motorized bicycles are required to carry insurance. Low-speed electric bicycles do not need insurance but must still be registered with the Motor Vehicle Commission. People who violate the law could receive a $50 ticket and have their bikes impounded.
