Jennie Steward says she never imagined the home she shared with her husband would be gone by the time she returned. The Kerrville woman was in North Texas helping her parents with a garage sale when floodwaters swept away the house she shared with her husband, John Mark Steward, along Goat Creek. He was one of two people confirmed dead in the Hill Country flooding. Sitting in her parents’ kitchen, Steward reflected on the life she built with her husband after the two met at church. “I would say the past three years of my life have been the best,” she said. She said she believes their relationship was guided by faith. “We both needed each other. We both completed each other, and I do honestly believe the Lord brought me to that place,” Steward said. The couple had celebrated their third wedding anniversary just one day before the flooding. Steward said she left for Midlothian before the floodwaters rushed in. “When you look at the property, there’s nothing. It’s all gone,” she said. She said a neighbor tried to reach her husband as the flooding intensified. “My neighbor Mike jumped in his truck, trying to back the truck up to our property to try and get him out, but by the time he got there, the house had lifted up,” she said. Before the home was swept away, Steward said her husband made one final call to a neighbor. “He did say something along the facts of I’m scared. How am I going to get out?” she said. According to Steward, her husband’s body was later found in Center Point, about 20 miles away. He was 65. Despite her loss, Steward said her husband’s faith continues to inspire her. “His faith that was so beautiful that he shared with everybody. He would walk into the room and light up the room,” she said. “I do believe that he called on the Lord and the Lord gave him comfort,” she said. Steward said she plans to return to Kerrville, trusting the same faith that she says brought the couple together. “I’m going to go back to Kerrville, and that I’m going to be OK, and that Jesus has me,” she said. ...read more read less
