A 15-year-old girl escaped an attempted kidnapping in Keene before witnesses helped police identify the suspect, leading to his arrest in Fort Worth, investigators said.
Keene police said the attempted kidnapping happened Wednesday along Old Betsy Road in the Johnson County town.
Detectives re
leased grainy surveillance images captured by a witness’s dash camera showing a black SUV investigators say was driven by the suspect.
According to police, the man pulled alongside the girl as she walked near the roadway, grabbed her and tried to force her into the SUV. The teenager escaped, and when bystanders confronted the suspect, he sped away.
Keene detectives said multiple law enforcement agencies helped track down 28-year-old Carlos Cuevas-Ruiz in Fort Worth, where he was arrested on a charge of attempted kidnapping.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by NBC 5, Cuevas-Ruiz told detectives he wanted to steal the girl’s cellphone. Despite that statement, investigators charged him with attempted kidnapping.
“It kind of startled us,” neighbor Ramon Luna said.
“It was honestly outrageous because this is a church town. It’s a quiet town,” Luna said.
Neighbors said they were shocked by what police described.
“I was shocked because my granddaughters, they take the dog for a walk,” neighbor Dedee Shaw said.
Michelle Callihan, who lives nearby and runs a home cleaning business, said she is grateful witnesses were willing to step in and provide investigators with a description of the suspect.
“Luckily, there are neighbors that are willing to step forward and try to help,” Callihan said.
“I’m just glad they were caught, and they weren’t able to harm another child,” she said.
