Community activists in Oakland are calling for greater transparency following an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead earlier this week. According to Oakland police, the shooting happened Monday afternoon in a shopping center parking lot near International Boulevard and 40th Avenue. Police said the man lunged at officers with a knife after officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by giving commands, but he refused to comply. The incident began after the California Highway Patrol was investigating a homeless man armed with a knife. Police said the man ran away from CHP officers before the encounter with Oakland police. At a news conference Friday, community activists said they do not accept the department’s explanation and are demanding Oakland police release all body camera footage from the incident. “They brought a gun to a blade fight,” said Cat Brooks, co-founder and executive director of the Anti Police-Terror Project. Brooks also questioned why CHP officers were involved and said there has been “an uptick on racial profiling.” The shooting marks the third time this year that Oakland police officers have shot a person.
